Engaging Men to End Gender-Based Violence
In Kajiado County, the story of gender-based violence (GBV) is often seen as a “men vs. women” struggle—one that leaves communities divided and voices unheard. Checkmate Violence aims to change that narrative. In collaboration with FODDAJ and Elveza Media, this project brings men and women together in a united stand against GBV, empowering them to work as allies, not opponents.
Through a series of draught tournaments across Ngong Town, Kware, Rongai, Saikeri, Esonorua, and a grand finale in Ngong, Checkmate Violence provides men with safe spaces to engage, listen, and reflect on their role in ending GBV. Local ambassadors trained by experts spark conversations around GBV in familiar settings, breaking down stereotypes, and encouraging open dialogue.
Our team has documented each powerful moment—every discussion, every pledge, every step toward a future without violence. By addressing not only GBV but also the challenges these communities face—such as drought, child marriage, and substance abuse—Checkmate Violence tackles the root causes of violence with empathy and action.
Our mission is simple: GBV is a societal issue, and together we can end it.
